The Jung Center of Houston presents Stoicism: The Power that Comes from Getting Real about Reality. Popular instructor Jill Carroll (pictured)follows her recent exploration of Epicurean philosophy with this introduction to the Stoics, Thursday, September 9, 6 - 7:30 pm. Encounter the enduring, often misunderstood wisdom of Stoicism. In contemporary use, Stoicism has come to mean a kind of steel-hearted, unemotional approach to life that seems, frankly, more mechanical or inanimate than truly human. This is not an accurate understanding of Stoics or the philosophy they live. In this lecture, we will review the central tenets of this rich philosophical tradition. We will see that the Stoics have a powerful relationship to the facts of realityas it is, not as we wish it to bewhich opens the possibility for deep peace, acceptance and compassion in life. Jill Carroll, PhD, is an adjunct associate professor in religious studies at Rice University where she also directed the Boniuk Center for Religious Tolerance for five years. She writes a featured blog for the Houston Chronicle called "Talking Tolerance" and is the creator and founding director of the Amazing Faiths Project (www.amazingfaithsproject.org). She is the author of The Savage Side: Reclaiming Violent Models of God and A Dialogue of Civilizations: Gulen's Islamic Ideals and Humanistic Discourse.
