Houston Grand Opera (HGO) presents La Traviata, byGiuseppe Verdi. Running Friday January 27, 2012 - Sunday February 12, 2012, in Wortham Theater Center - Brown Theater. Love, sacrifice and redemption: La Traviatas dazzling heroine embodies all three in one of operas most beloved stories. The story of Violetta Valrya Parisian courtesan who makes the fatal mistake of falling in lovehas defined romantic tragedy since La dame aux Camlias, the Dums novel that inspired Verdi, appeared in 1848. Verdis opera paints a picture of a glittering Second Empire Paris, the serenity of Violettas country estate and the heroines fate on a cold, pre-Lenten morning. This production is owned by The Lyric Opera of Chicago and is a generous and deeply appreciated gift of The Gramma Fisher Foundation of Marshalltown, Iowa. Original production staged by Frank Galati.
