- Introduced by Ping Sun, Rice University Representative Aftershock is an epic story of a family separated as a result of the great Tangshan earthquake of 1976, which claimed 255,000 lives, injured 160,000, and destroyed 650,000 Chinese homes. Seven-year-old twins are trapped beneath the rubble, prompting rescue workers to believe that freeing one child will most likely kill the other. The siblingss mother makes the agonizing choice to save her son, not knowing that her daughter witnesses the decision and miraculously survives. Y. Ping Sun came to Rice University in 2004 with her husband David W. Leebron, Rice's seventh president. A native of Shanghai, China, Ping attended Beijing Languages University and was offered a full scholarship to Princeton University, where she graduated cum laude. She received a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, and practiced law in New York. Ping currently is on counsel at the law firm Yetter Coleman LLP and serves Rice as a University Representative in numerous roles on campus and in the Houston community. She is also nominated as one of the 2012 ABC-13 Women of Distinction.
